Dear Fredericktown Parents and Students,
I’d like to welcome you to the 2019-2020 school year. I’m Brent Garee, and I’m so grateful and privileged to be your new building principal. I wanted to take moment to introduce myself as we begin the process of getting to know one another.
I have been in the field of education for twenty-three years, most of them as a high school English teacher. For the largest part of those classroom years, I was teaching English at Watkins Memorial High School (12 years), though I got my start right out of college at Danville High School. Throughout my teaching career, I taught all grade levels, from English 9 to Advanced Placement Language and Composition. When my favorite part of teaching started to be mentoring new colleagues and leading my department, I realized it was time to make the move into administration, where I thought I could impact even more students. This led me to Eastland Career Center in Groveport, where I have been the Assistant Director (Assistant Principal) for the past seven years. I loved learning more about preparing students for their future and expanding my own understanding of the different ways high schools can and should prepare students for what comes next.
On a personal note, I am a small town boy, raised in Croton, Ohio. I went to Northridge High School which graduated (and still does graduate) about 100 students a year. I still live in the Northridge district where my wife of twenty-three years, Kim, teaches English. This fall, our son will be a sophomore at Ohio University, while one of our daughters will be a senior and the other a freshman at NHS. When it’s all said and done, my wife and I are surrounded by teenagers both day and night, and that’s the way we like it. I’m a geek about reading books about education and educational leadership while I listen to classic rock on my back deck, but I also love hiking, cycling, and kayaking.
I look forward to working with you throughout the school year as I get to know you. I already know some things about the Freddie community: that the community of Fredericktown is tight, a place where people truly have one another’s backs; that our students are very high performing, academically; that our athletic teams are proud of being competitive; and that FHS has a reputation for both excellence and hospitality. Those things I know - and the kindness that has already been extended to me - make me extremely excited to jump in with everything I’ve got to become a part of all that good stuff.
Please feel free to contact me if you ever have any questions or concerns. You can reach me at firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling the main office of the high school.
