2015 State Wrestling Tournament Recap

Carson Mills and Milan Pozderac both competed in the OHSAA State Wrestling Tournament held at Value City Arena this past weekend, March 12-14. Carson entered as the #4 ranked wrestler in the state after winning his second district championship. Milan had a different path, he was unranked and was only an alternate so we had no idea going into the weekend if he was even going to be able to compete. After all the Division 3 wrestlers finished weighing in, disappointment began setting in that Milan would not get the chance to wrestle, but one of the workers came out and wrote down his name as one of the alternates who needed to weigh-in. All of us were excited for Milan and come to find out the 4th place finisher at the Coshocton district did not pass skin check so Milan took his place on the bracket.

Milan’s draw was not easy as he got the #2 ranked wrestler from Apple Creek Waynedale first round. Milan wrestled him tough and did not go down without a fight but ultimately the Apple Creek Waynedale wrestler won by pin. In the first round of the consolation bracket Milan put together a great match and won his 27th match by pin over a wrestler from Defiance Tinora HS, which is now a new school record. The next morning if Milan won he would secure a spot in the top 8 and would be an automatic placer in state. Unfortunately, the wrestler from Mapleton prevailed victorious over Milan 8-5. It was a great effort by Milan and we are all extremely proud of his accomplishments this season.

Carson placed 4th in the state becoming a 2x state place winner and continues to be our school’s only state wrestling placer. Carson opened up the tournament with a first period pin over a wrestler from Delta. In the quarterfinals Carson faced the #3 ranked wrestler from Dayton Christian and came up short losing 2-1. In his first consolation match Carson was able to hold on to a 9-7 victory over the wrestler from Northwood to guarantee his second state tournament placement. In the consolation quarterfinals, he took more control over this match winning 13-7 over the wrestler from Garrettsville Garfield. In the consolation semifinals he had to go to the sudden victory overtime period to win 7-5 over the wrestler from Elyria Catholic and set up a rematch with the wrestler from Dayton Christian. There were several scoring flurries in this match but with less than 20seconds to go in the match Carson went for a big move and got caught and pinned with only 11 seconds left. Not the way he wanted to end his career, but I am proud of what he has accomplished in his 4 years at Fredericktown.
