Crunch Out Obesity

Fredericktown 4th grade students participated in a physical activity and nutrition program (Sponsored by United Way, Knox County Health Dept. and the YMCA) during the months of October and November. All students received a free exercise ball and learned great tips about how to get fit and eat the correct portion size of the right foods. The program culminated with an essay contest.

Crunch Out Obesity was created to help kids and families realize the importance of getting fit and eating the rights foods with the correct portion.

  • 33% of Knox County 3rd graders were considered overweight or obese in 2010.
  • More than 1 in 3 children (ages 10-17) in Ohio are overweight due to lack of exercise and the intake of unhealthy foods.
  • By 2018 obesity rates in Ohio will surpass 50% of the population.
  • This is the first generation that may not outlive their parents.

Congratulations to Micah Phillips, Caitlin Roddy, Kit Bellman and Ella Bouton as this year’s Crunch Out Obesity essay contest winners! The students were to explain how the Crunch Out Obesity program has improved their health through physical activity and better nutritional habits. This year’s Fredericktown overall winner was Micah Phillips!

The Awards Celebration will be held on Saturday, January 20 from 11:30 to 1 p.m. at the Ohio Eastern Star – Gallagher Centre, 1451 Gambier Road in Mount Vernon.
